39 rescued from Noida old-age home

Must Read

A video showing elderly residents in shocking conditions inside a Noida old-age home has prompted quick action from authorities. The video, which was sent to the Social Welfare Department in Lucknow, led to a raid by the State Women’s Commission and Noida police on Thursday.

Locked rooms, no staff, and inhumane conditions

The raid took place at Anand Niketan Vridha Ashram, located in Noida’s Sector 55. Officials found 39 senior citizens in deeply troubling conditions, many were locked in rooms, left without clothes, or wearing clothes stained with urine and feces.

State Women Commission member Meenakshi Bharala, who was part of the inspection, said: “Some old men were locked up in basement-like rooms.”

She added that while women were given only partial clothing, most of the men had none.

The viral clip that triggered the investigation showed an elderly woman with her hands tied inside a room. After receiving the video, officials rushed to the home and began a rescue operation.

Upon arrival, they found that many of the elderly had been restrained using their own clothing and left unattended. Shockingly, there was no trained medical staff at the facility. One woman claiming to be a nurse admitted she had only completed her 12th standard.

Initial investigations show that the Ashram collected ₹2.5 lakh as a donation from the families of the residents and charged an additional ₹6,000 per month for food and lodging.

Despite these payments, the home lacked basic hygiene, safety, and medical care.

A case has now been filed against the old-age home. Authorities have confirmed that all 39 rescued elderly residents will be shifted to a government-run old-age home in the coming days.
